Since I skipped this last week, here’s two weeks worth of things that I love…
The Royal Wedding | I don’t care if you make fun of me because I’m still so obsessed with all things Will and Kate (and British for good measure). I baked scones for re-watch party, and although they weren’t the Queen’s recipe, they were still pretty great. I also just watched the Lifetime movie and it was so bad that it was good. I can’t get enough!
Parchment Paper | The most annoying thing about baking? When baked goods stick in the pan. Let’s just say I had an episode on last week with a loaf of Spiced Applesauce Bread that finally caused me to break down and shell out $2.99 for a roll of parchment paper. Now that I’ve done so, I can’t believe I didn’t sooner. So useful!
Free food | Before I came to college, one of my cousins passed on this solemn piece of advice that I haven’t forgotten since: Never pass up free food. I’ve made the most of any opportunity that has passed my way over the past four years to enjoy a free snack or meal, and as my college days are winding down, I’ve had what seems like even more opportunities than ever before. Like tonight, for example, when seniors were invited to a reception and champagne toast with the Jesuits. Pretty fantastic.
Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 Trailer | The end of an era, but a really epic ending at least. Honestly though, I get really emotional thinking about the end of the Harry Potter dynasty. Harry Potter is like my childhood.
While there have been a lot of really great things about the past week (my final APO formal, Relay for Life, finishing a draft of my seminar paper, etc.), all I really want to talk about right now is the present moment. And at the present moment, I am at home in my own bed–where I will be sleeping for the next four nights in a row.
Because sometimes a girl just needs to be at home. I need to be in my car, sunglasses on, eyes on the the interstate, and country music on the radio. I need the familiar curving, country highways lined with trees and rolling hills that trace my path back to the place I know better than any other. I need evenings eating ice cream with my best friend and nights spent talking to my parents. I need curling up in my queen-sized bed and catching up on Glee before I go to sleep (without setting an alarm).
So today, I just really, really love Easter Break, and I’m so thankful for this precious time with friends and family.
Being healthy | I had some 24-hour stomach bug earlier in the week, and it was not pretty. Lots of eating saltines, skipping classes, and lounging on the couch watching the Food Network instead of doing something productive. Thankfully, I now feel much better, and my appreciation for my health has been renewed.
NKOTBSB | I so wish I was going to see the New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys tour. In the meantime, I will compensate by listening to this song on repeat.
(Because I love St. Louis, too!)
Cardinals Baseball. I went to two baseball games this week. Monday night’s game was cold and the Card’s lost, but I was surrounded by my fellow SLU seniors. Tuesday night’s game was with tickets from my very generous uncle; it much warmer, and the Card’s managed to pull off a win!
Dinner with my Dad at The Good Pie. Without a doubt, that was some of the best pizza I’ve tasted since Rome.
Avoiding schoolwork. Well, senioritis has finally kicked in. With less than fifty days until graduation, it really was only a matter of time. This one might come back to haunt me, but for now, I’m having fun!
When the perfect song comes on at the perfect time. Enough said.
What do you love this week?
Realizing that some things are far more important than schoolwork. Like going out on Wednesday nights, even though I have a test and ten pages of a paper due on Friday. Tonight might be rough, but I have no regrets about this precious time spent with my friends. As Tom Petty once said, “The work never ends, but college does.”
This quote & pondering the true meaning of accompaniment: “If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” (attributed to Lila Watson)
Late night talks with my roomies. Because they’re the best. Especially at 2am.
Discovering that Taco Bell will replace meat with beans in their tacos. Genius. I wish my vegetarian self had known this years ago.
April. One of my favorite months of the year, even though it has notoriously fickle weather (not as fickle as March, however).
Redbox. Become a fan on Facebook & get a free movie rental!
Spring Cleaning. I gave away two cardigans from my collection the other day. While I still have way too many clothes, it’s a baby step in the right direction. I hope to pare everything down a lot more in the coming months.
Pintrest. I just discovered this two days ago, and I’m already addicted.
Hummus. I used to think I hated hummus. Now I can’t stop eating it, especially the roasted red pepper variety. I bought a container on Saturday at Trader Joe’s, and it may already be 90% gone.
What do you love this week?
The first week back from any break is always a little bit rough, but here’s a few things that have brightened up my days.
Spring Break memories: I’m already missing this view and the beach. More pictures from Spring Break to come soon!
Retreats: Yesterday I was able to go a brief, overnight retreat for graduating seniors. It was a really wonderful group of people, and it was so nice to have time to reflect on the past four years at SLU and what they have meant to me. I will be forever grateful for the experiences I have had and the people I’ve met here over the past four years, and last night was a great reminder of why I love this place so dearly.
Finding out that an assignment is due later than originally thought: I thought I had ten pages of a paper due on Monday. Turns out, it’s actually due next Friday. Win.
Remaking favorite recipes: I always like trying new things, so I rarely remake recipes unless I really love them (ie. chocolate chip cookies). This week, I remade a previous recipe, and it was even better than I remembered.
Jean jacket-dress-bare legs-flats kind of weather: The temperature dipped back down to the 30’s and 40’s today, but the beginning of this week was perfect. St. Louis weather is notoriously fickle, so I’m hoping our warm temperatures come back again soon!
I firmly believe life is too short to not celebrate the things that make you happy, both big and small. Here’s a few things I’m loving this week.
Rimmel London’s Steel Grey nail polish: Seriously, I love this this nail polish. It doesn’t clash with anything, is just different enough to make a subtle statement, and the $3.99 price tag isn’t bad at all. I have gotten so many compliments about it, too, from really random people.
Studying in coffee shops: Last week, I tried to study at the library. It was horrible, and I’m never deserting my coffee shops again.
Fro Yo: Especially when shared with good friends.
King Cake + Fat Tuesday diner food: Pre-Lenten food is the best.
Lenten Reflections from SLU Campus Ministry: And actually just SLU Campus Ministry in general. I feel so privileged to be a part of this community. And on a similar note, Lent. These next 39 days are going to be good for me. I can already feel it.
The start of Spring Break: The only class I was planning to attend tomorrow just got canceled, so now I am officially on Spring Break!
